Advice on leaving dog alone please.....

Please can I ask for some advice. I have a one year old working cocker spaniel who is crate trained and sleeps overnight in her crate with no worries and never any objections.

I don't work, so she is pretty much always with me. If there is someone home she never goes in the crate during the day and choses to sleep on the sofa or just on the carpet. If I do go to do the shopping or pop out for something she goes in the crate and settles down quickly and quietly. But, until now I have never left her alone more than an hour and a half.

With lock down, and not being able to do very much this has been completely sufficient. However, I would like the opportunity, at times, to leave her for longer periods (I'm talking absolute limit 3-4 hours, and only very occasionally.) In this instance I would prefer to leave her out of the crate, just so she has more room and she is not then confined overnight and for a chunk of the day.

She's just come into season and so I have tried to use this as a tester to leave her uncrated at home while I'm on the half hour school run. She is not destructive at all - but she does bark - a lot. (To quantify. She is a bit of a nervous barker. She barks at people out the front window and at any bumps and noises she does not recognise, as well as if there is a knock on the door - but this is never really for long, just to show us what's going on and then she settles down.) So far, when I leave her without being in the crate she barks all the time I'm away (so I'm guessing she's really quite anxious.)

A a small addition, I wanted to add that when we are at home and she really wants to chill and get away from everything she pulls herself under my sofa (which is a really tiny space and much more confined than her crate) and will happily stay there for a good couple of hours out of choice.

Sorry, this is a really long way of asking, am I being precious about not wanting to leave her for a bit longer in the crate if I'm going out ( very occasionally)? It seems she feels safer and calmer there when there is no one in the house.

Also, does anyone have any training advice in what I could try to get her used to being on her own in the house and out of the crate without feeling anxious?

Thanks so much!

Pancreatitis and Phenobarbital - After Issue Recovery

My 4.5 y/o lab mix had a rough bout of Pancreatitis last week, was hospitalized for two days (IV and Fluids, Barium test in case of foreign object, etc.). She started Phenobarbital last year for seizures.

Initially we brought her in Thursday afternoon, after she started vomiting on Wednesday. They gave her fluids and sent her home. on Friday evening she was still not holding down water, so the vet hospital admitted her The vet confirmed today that he did not give her Phenobarbital while she was in the vet hospital (she normally gets two pills a day, but maybe he forgot? not sure). She came home on Sunday and so far has been doing much better. She's on antibiotics and Pepcid AC, and we started her phenobarbital as usual. She's eating her bland chicken/rice diet, seems happy, wagging her tail, and trying to play. All good.

The question I have, is that she seems wobbly/a bit uncoordinated in her back legs at times. She's also going through episodes of anxiousness. It's similar to when she first got on the phenobarbital last year (the adjustment period).

The vet said that with the half life of phenobarbital, she shouldn't have incoordination from readjusting, but in online research I see the half life can be anywhere from 30-75 hours (she was off of it for 3 full days). The vet also is saying the antibiotics shouldn't cause the incoordination or anxiety in her.

I keep thinking, she hasn't eaten much, she's just starting to eat now, she's back on her meds, all of that may be contributing to her actions. The vet's only response is to bring her in for a recheck (he doesn't know what could be causing it), but with the hospital time and just getting out, I don't want to continue to bring her back and forth to stress her.

Has anyone had any similar experiences, or have any input?

Chihuahua liver and urea problems

Hi everyone. Apologies in advance for a very long message but I am beyond confused and upset about what is going on with my 8 year old female Chi.

In June 2020 my (then) 7 year old Chi stopped eating, had her tail down all the time, slept a lot, had a faster and irregular heart rate, was breathing quicker and had paler gums and ears.
She had blood tests done that were almost all too high or too low so was rushed to an animal hospital. She was severely anemic, high liver readings, etc. It was touch and go at the hospital but she pulled through and eventually came home again.

Her blood tests results were almost all back to normal, and the ones that weren't were heading in the right direction.
In October 2020 I did blood tests again and she was continuing to improve.
In January 2021 I did blood tests again and she was again continuing to improve.

However in April 2021 when I did blood tests some of the results that hadn't fully recovered but were improving, had started to go back the wrong way again. The results were:
ALT 47% higher than top range.
UREA 68% higher than top range.
JAUNDICE 13% higher than top range.

Two weeks later in May 2021 the blood test results were then:
ALT 111% higher than top range.
UREA 100% higher than top range.
BILIRUBIN high.

Five days later in May 2021 she had a liver function test. The results were:
ALT 104% higher than top range.
ALKP 106% higher than top range.
UREA still a little high.
JAUNDICE back to normal.

Two weeks later in May 2021 she was sedated and had a thorough scan of her organs and more in depth blood work. They were happy with the scan and couldn't see any problems. The blood results were:
ALT 15% higher than top range.
ALKP 81% higher than top range.
CK 13% higher than top range.
UREA 51% higher than top range.

She was then put on Samylin (a liver supplement).

Four weeks later in June 2021 she had a liver function test done again and the results were:
ALT 32% higher than top range.
ALKP 112% higher than top range.
UREA 52% higher than top range.
Bile acids now normal.

That is all of her results so far.
The hospital never gave her an official diagnosis last year. My vet thinks it was peritonitis and that part of the liver is scarred or something, hence why the readings are a bit off. He is sure she doesn't have liver shunt as her bile acids are normal.
Apart from the blood tests being too high, the rest of her results have recovered fantastically. She's no longer anemic, white blood cell count is good etc etc. These liver readings and urea readings just won't go down to normal.
When she got ill a year ago she was on Burns food but has since been on Purina Pro Plan Hypoallergenic.
She is a healthy weight and has even been putting on weight, not losing any.
She is a happy dog and has good energy. She doesn't appear ill. Sometimes she may go a little quiet or be a little picky with her food but it is shortlived and could be down to the weather, sleep etc. Overall she appears to be a very healthy and happy dog.

Does anyone have a Chi with similar issues? Or has any idea what my dog's diagnosis might be? Am I missing something? Is there something else I can test or try? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Please help me... My MIL has a cocker spaniel he is just over a year.

I have three boys 5 and 7. The dog is lovely but the following is happening and it's worrying me.

She stops playing with the kids if the dog starts barking as it's jealous and she starts to stroke dog.
The dog is jumping all. Over the kids even if they are on chairs, or jumping up at them.. Nothing is said and the dog is scratching the boy's... Only to be told he
Its trying to take food off them at any chance.
They are not allowed to play with toys on the floor as the dog tries to eat the toys.

When they eat its under the table

If the kids are playing with him, then she is forever telling them ooo be careful.

I don't know what to do but I can see this going horribly wrong.

Sorry, but this is kind of a long story...

Hi. I'm trying to help a friend named Peter. He got a rescue dog that had been running the woods with another dog. The Humane Society caught them, and Peter ended up with "Beemer." She looks mainly black Lab, but is somewhat smaller than a Lab would normally be.

Peter and Beemer have lived at the same place in Wisconsin for three years. (Beemer might be about 5 years old.) Peter has never neglected the dog; he certainly hasn't abused her; she actually has the best of everything. She does need a leash, as the place where she and Peter live has no dog run. But he takes Beemer for a walk more than once each day. Other than that, she stays in his apartment, sleeps in bed with him, and looks like the picture of a dog who has it made.

Unfortunately, she has run away three times. Peter got her back once, when he found her hanging out with another dog. I'm not sure what happened the second time, but this time she's been gone for almost two weeks. The odd thing (to me, anyway) is that she's hanging around the area. There are many people she knows, but if anyone approaches her, she'll walk away.

Last night, Peter was sitting in his car, when Beemer walked into the parking space next to him. He didn't want to try opening the door, since he'd done that before, and she walked away from him, too. So he talked to her, hoping she might show some sign of wanting to come closer. Instead, she walked away again. This morning, Peter said, "I don't understand. She actually looked so sad standing there. Her tail was drooping straight down."

I feel so bad for both Peter and Beemer, and I have no understanding of a situation like this. If someone has ideas, we'll appreciate the feedback. Thanks much

We have a male chug/Italian spitz mix , whose 25 weeks old . He’s pretty well trained and KNOWS he has to pee outside but he still owes all over the front room...... it’s getting bad - I will just take him out and he will go and do it again ! We have cats and they are small kittens and need access to the litter box in the area .... the female twin of him does also use this litter box - he pees all around it - I know he’s trying to and thinks he’s doing okay because sister does it but .... he’s not doing it the same way as she is . .... I have tried to stop sister from eliminating in the litter box but she also is determined to use it / we take them out a lot !! Like ... most of our days and nights until we go to bed are spent outdoors and with them taking them out .... so he does get slot of time - all medical reasons are also out ruled he just ... doesn’t want to be trained or something idk . We try so hard with him and he just waits till we aren’t looking to do things we can’t keep an eye on him 24/7 ... what can I do I clean it up so much . I’m tired of my house smelling like pee .

Female dog peeing and pooping on beds

I have a not spayed female spaniel A little over a year old. I got her when she was eight weeks and used the crate training method for potty training. I have two other dogs that are fixed male and female that I used the same potty training method and they have worked just fine for them. The problem is if any bedroom door is left open she will go Pee or poop on the bed no matter if she just got walked. She is on a feeding schedule they get walked 2 to 3 hours apart 5 to 6 times a day on long walks. If she’s left in the living room or the kitchen with all bedroom door shut she will not use the bathroom only if the doors left open and then she’ll go use it on the beds. I have tried re-teaching her with the crate putting her back in and it has not fix the problem. I feel like this is a behavior issue maybe a Dominus thing I never had a unfixed female before. She does poop and Pee on the leash on the walks but anytime a doors is left open she wants to go use it on a bed. I have even tried keeping her with me all day to keep her from using the bathroom on a bed but any chance she gets she will sneak off and use the bathroom on the bed. It doesn’t matter who’s bed it is the doors left open there’s a bed in the room she’ll poop and Pee on it. She does not do this on any other furniture rugs carpets just beds.

9 month old Female fixed pound puppy. I've had for 1 week.
Extremely connected to me and I'm afraid me to her.
Very timid and skittish. Not with me but does not leave my side.
Somewhat big yard and neighbor came over and kneeled down to invite pet. Dog would not get within 10 feet and when he stood up put her tail between legs and ran off very scared.
Spends a lot of time with tail between legs.
Today went to vet and bathed at grooming place - not eventful. I was with her at vet but left her to be bathed.
Tonight 3 year old grandaughter over. We (stupidly) encouraged her to pet her and give food. Dog was having none of it, wanted to leave area.....Until somewhat cornered and girl came toward her with hand out. Dog barked (never does) and nipped at her. Missed her tiny fingers by nothing.
I don't know the history of this dog....
Questions;
~Does this indicate abuse?
~Is this just the personallity of this dog?
~Is it possible she will ever be a funloving family memeber?
~What can we do to make her less afreaid of.........everything?
Any comments / help appreciated.

Boerboel behavioral problem

Hello all,

I have a Boerboel female, now 15 months old. We have done the basic training with her and she has been really good behaving dog since she was puppy. No barking unnecessarily, no aggression, gets well along with anyone, a little bit of chewing wrong things when she was younger but not anymore, listens and obeys well normally.

However, just now about a month ago (after she got her first period) she has started acting strange somewhat. When I played with her catch, she suddenly just started to look nervous and peed on the floor inside the house. As mentioned above, she has not done that for almost a year (since we completed her potty training). I was shocked at first and punished her verbally and stopped playing with her. Then the next time same exact thing happened again, and again and this time I punished her a little harder by giving her a slap. Which I probably should not have done, since she stopped completely playing with me after that.

Now slowly she has started to play with me again a little bit again and the same thing happened just today. After picking up the ball I threw, she stopped on the middle way and peed on the rug. She never does this with my wife. Only with me. I am kind of lost here. I hope someone could give me an advise?
Save
Share
Reply

Hello,

My partner and I are curious about some behavioral issues in our 17 month old dog, Gigi, that we adopted from a rescue back in January. Our other dog, Kiki, is 11 years old and we have had her since she was a puppy. She's a pitbull terrier mix, Very well behaved and has calm temperament, often submissive.

Gigi will sometimes lash out at our older dog Kiki. Sometimes is involved food, such as Kiki interrupting Gigi's dinner or getting to close to food. Sometimes it happens out of nowhere and we aren't sure what triggered it, but I will note that it's always around us. From our dogcam, they are very relaxed with each other when we are gone. Gigi will also give Kiki a hard time when she tries to jump on the couch or bed, she barks and kind of bullies her. It seems that it is escalating and she is starting to actually bite our other dog.

Below is Gigi's backstory. Please let us know if you have advice on how to help this behavior.

Gigi, 17 month old miniature schnauzer Pomeranian mix. Her backstory is that her original owner passed away leaving the owner's daughter to take care of Gigi. This person had 5 other dogs and we are not sure of the situation, but she took Gigi to a rescue. Gigi was adopted then returned, and also moved to a few different fosters. I'm assuming she wasn't properly socialized and maybe a bit bullied, so want to ensure we are correcting this behavior in an appropriate way.

My 2 year old terrier mix has been acting not himself since June 21, almost 2 weeks. He went to the groomer that day and there was a thunderstorm that night. Since then he is practically living under my bed!
he doesn’t seem to be sick or injured and still will take walks and car rides. Hard to get him out from under the bed and he isn’t doing his normal play.
any ideas?

Is his incision infected after neutering?

Hello! I just adopted my dog, Archie from the SPCA about a week ago after they had neutered him. We were not given any after care instructions other than to not bathe him for ten days. He has been wearing an E-Collar and has done pretty well with it. I wiped the area with a baby wipe a few days ago just to keep it clean but left the incision alone. When we first picked him up it wasn’t swollen or bruised at all, just loose skin… now it’s puffy and reddish pink. No discharge or any kind or bleeding. I’d like to mention that the CCSPCA refused to give him a bath prior to surgery even though he was covered in feces… although when we picked him up he seemed cleaner, just smelled like shelter. Please let me know if this looks infected or just normal swelling. He has a vet appointment on Monday (of course our car check engine came on today though). I’m starting to get really concerned because this is our first dog and my first male dog. Thanks for any feedback

Border collie red healer

Hey so I have 2 dogs. One is a border collie red healer and I have been having some issues with lately. We got him as a puppy and have had him for a year and a half now. Lately he has been growling and snarling at my wife when I’m not there or when she goes to put him in his kennel. I wasn’t too concerned at first because he does the same for me and I figured it was just him letting us know he doesn’t like it. But sometimes when my wife gets after him for something he will bark and snarl at her. Just the other day she was just trying to get him to move so she could sweep where he was and he growled at her again. She went to just scratch him and let him know he wasn’t in trouble and he snapped at her face. I’m not sure what to do about this or even what would cause this. He is the sweetest dog and is amazing with kids and super protective. I just don’t know how to fix this

Japanese Spitz Mix resource guarding and some more

Just over 2 months ago we adopted a Japanese spitz mix (not 100% sure of the mix). He is around 18 months old and generally he's an awesome dog but he has some really weird issues and as I'm a new dog owner and my partner only had guard dogs when she was young we're a bit lost in how to deal with it.

He has a bit of a difficult history. He was given as a gift from boyfriend to girlfriend. The broke up, the girl said she couldn't live with him as he reminded her too much of her ex (I know....) then she gave him to another family who have 2 kids. It sounds like they weren't really set up for having a dog and the kids were rough with him. They gave him away as I think he bit one of the kids, he was then fostered by my partners sister and finally we decided to give him a proper home. I have only managed to find this backstory out through really pushing and I think there's probably something else going on that the previous owners are embarrassed about.

The normal thing:

He's a resource guarder. Generally it's only with food, and not all food, but if we give him his bowl he gets super growly if you walk anywhere near him, the same with his favourite big treats. I understand this is kind of normal behavior for many rescues and we're working on tossing him high value treats etc to help him with this. He definitely got better with it so I'm not too worried about this part. I think we have it under control mostly. However he did take a snap at a friend of mine (and broke skin) when my friend didn't realise he had a treat under him and approached him from behind. So that was a bit of a worry for me as he drew blood and it's not something I've ever really seen any dogs do before (While I didn't grow up with dogs, most of my family did)

The weird thing:

He has this weird thing that happens once every couple of days where he will come to us on the sofa, or near the bed etc. He will lay there for a bit, seemingly nice and content, often physically touching us. Then randomly he will just look up and start growling and bearing his teeth. I don't really know what to do as it's him who has initiated the contact, and he loves to sit on/ next to us most of the time. I have looked for patterns in when he gets growly but there doesn't seem to be any. He's not sleepy, he's not got treats, he often not even being touched. He has chosen to come and be next to us and seemingly randomly start getting aggressive.

Does anyone have any ideas of where to start with it?
Save
Share
Reply
JoanneF
JoanneF
Super Moderator
Joined Jan 10, 2020
5,139 Posts
#2 · 8 d ago
Hi.

First, resource guarding is a quite natural behaviour, animals are hard wired not to share as their survival is based on keeping what they have.

And, it has only been two months, so it is early to expect his behaviour to be normal.

I wonder though, if he is resource guarding the sofa. It might be best not to let him on the sofa at all. He might be a bit conflicted, wanting the contact with you but also then wanting to guard the sofa.

So if you don't let him on the sofa, have a super-comfortable bed for him and reward him heavily for using it. Make sure it is not in a high traffic area of the house so he isn't disturbed. When he comes to you for attention, I'd also use the five second rule. Stroke him for five seconds (some dogs prefer you avoid the head) then stop. Only if he initiates further contact by nudging you or similar, continue for another five seconds then stop again. Continue only for as long as he keeps asking. That gives him control and in turn that will build his confidence around you because he knows he can make it stop at any time.

There is more information on resource guarding here.

Anesthesia for suture removal after spay??

Hi, this is my first post here. Looking forward to any comments/opinion.

My dog was spayed on 22June and her muscle sutures broke 3 days later and she was operated again to restitch that on 28June. She was being given injectables everyday after the first surgery and she really exerted herself a lot during those trips to the vet because she is extremely scared of the vet and fights really really hard when being held down to give the injections. The doctor thinks that is what caused the muscle sutures to break.

Now we are a week past the second surgery and everything looks fine so far. The doctor says the sutures will be removed 3 days from now but he says it is advisable we do it with her under anesthesia. I think after the last complication, he is concerned about things getting messed up again if she fights like she usually does. He says it will hurt a bit and my dog really has zero pain tolerance, starts jumping like crazy at the slightest pinch. I am really worried about her going under a third time. I understand this is not usual. What do people here think?

It isn't usual but remember they are using a sharp blade and the stitches will be quite small, so it is fiddly with a wriggly dog. If they think a sedative wouldn't be enough, an anaesthetic might be safer. And, she won't be as stressed while the procedure is actually happening so that might help for future vet visits (and after Covid restrictions are eased, it might be worth calling into the vet regularly just for a visit and a treat, to try to make it less of an ordeal when she needs treatment).

Separation Anxiety help!

This is Martini! She is an 11 year old boston terrier, pomeranian mix. Ever since she was about 2 or 3 years old, she has suffered from anxiety. The older she gets the worse it gets, especially her separation anxiety. She has ate through a wall, dug up carpet, and destroyed 3 couches. I have tried crate training her and she escapes every cage, kennel, crate I have bought. She has also pulled 2 of her teeth out while escaping her cage. Does anyone know of any otc medication, supplements, or anything that has helped your dog? I have tried cbd and melatonin and those don't even seem to phase her!

Seizures in 1.5yr Corgi

My pembroke welsh corgi, who is only 1.5 years old, had three (possibly more) seizures in 24 hours. I didn’t see the seizures personally until I was going to bed and he suddenly started seizing. I saw the other seizures through replaying my security camera footage. His seizure lasted around 1 minute. I called the emergency vet and they told me these were cluster seizures and that I should take him in if he had 3 or more in under 24 hours. I eventually took him in and they did tests on him to figure out the cause of it. Everything came back normal and the vet told me that it could most likely be epileptic but won’t know for sure unless an MRI is done. However an MRI is around $3500. Since being discharged he has been given Keppra 250mg three times a day and 8 hours between each dose. It has been 2 days and he has not had a single seizure and he is just tire a bit more often. Other than that his eats, drinks, plays, and sleeps just fine and with a lot of energy. I am just concerned that I will not be able to constantly feed him Keppra every 8 hours due to my schedule or work for the rest of his life. Is there any medication that is safe (no other damage to other organs like the liver) and has a long period between each dose? Also is it possible to ween him off Keppra and have the seizures stop? The vet told me that some dogs can take the medication and they will not have seizures afterwards. Any advise from anyone is greatly appreciated and I would be grateful for any and all suggestions!!!

New maltipoo confinement area dilemas

I am getting a maltipoo at the end of the month that is expected to be 7lb full grown.
I am trying to decide on a confinement area to keep it safe when I need to step away. I’m also trying to think of something I can use even if I bring to somebody Hoise. I’m hoping this will be something I can use even when she is bigger if needed. Do you think the extra large soft crates can work since it’s such a small dog? They are 42 inches by 28”. I like these because they are closed in and portable? It is around $170?

I was wondering if anyone has 5minutes out of their day if they'd be willing to answer some questions? I'm not asking for any personal information or anything crazy, just looking to hear about your buying/adoption process and any troubles you may have had.

Hello, We are hoping to collect our new furry friend in Sept, & she'll be 4yrs 7mths. She's not neutered & has has 3/4 litters of puppies. Should we get her neutered or not please ? We'll not be having any puppies she'll be our family pet but I was concerned about her age ? She's also a small breed & so again I was concerned about anesthetic / surgery & she's a nervous little thing so I didn't want to put her under unnecessary stress. Thank you
